Card counting works because the deck isn't memoryless. Once a card is dealt, the next card is drawn from a slightly smaller deck with a slightly different composition. When the remaining shoe is rich in tens and aces, the player gets a few more blackjacks (paid 3:2), the dealer busts a touch more often, and the doubles and splits hit harder. The edge swings from around -0.5% at neutral to roughly +1.0% at a true count of +4 or so, depending on rules and penetration.
Hi-Lo is the standard tag set: +1 for 2 through 6, 0 for 7 to 9, -1 for 10, J, Q, K, A. Track the running count as cards are dealt, then divide by decks remaining to get the true count. True count is what you bet off, because a +6 with six decks left is barely above neutral, while a +6 with one deck left is a serious edge.
The speed drill flashes cards past at a configurable pace; you call the running count at the end. The true count quiz gives you a running count and a penetration depth; you do the division. The bet ramp lets you turn true count into units, and shows you the spread you've actually built. There's no Monte Carlo here, just real card-by-card maths.
Penetration is the share of the shoe the dealer deals before reshuffling. A 6-deck shoe with 75% penetration deals 4.5 decks; with 50% penetration only 3. Most of the EV in counting lives in the back third of the shoe, because that's where the count swings far enough from zero to matter. UK casinos typically run worse penetration than Las Vegas, around 50% on most tables. That's not a coincidence.
It's a counting trainer, not a green light. UK casinos are private clubs and they reserve the right to refuse service to advantage players. Counting is legal, but you have no right to play. The trainer drills the mechanics. The judgement about whether, where, and how to actually play is yours.
